What to Pack for a Kitesurfing Holiday in Zanzibar

Planning a kitesurfing trip to Zanzibar? Here’s everything you need to pack, and what you can leave at home.

The essentials

Swimwear — bring at least 3-4 sets. You’ll be in the water every day and things take time to dry in the humidity.

Rash guard — essential for sun protection on the water. A long-sleeve rash guard protects your arms and torso from sunburn and rash from the harness. Bring 2.

Board shorts or bikini — something you can kite in comfortably. Avoid anything too loose that will fill with water.

Sunscreen — SPF 50+ and water-resistant. You’ll burn fast on the water, even on cloudy days. Apply before every session. Zanzibar sun is no joke.

Sunglasses — polarised lenses are best for the water. Use a floating strap so you don’t lose them.

Water shoes or reef shoes — optional but useful at low tide when you’re walking on the reef or sand flats. Protects your feet from sea urchins.

What about kite equipment?

Leave it at home. At Zanzikite, all kite and wing foil equipment is included in your course price : brand new Ozone kites, bars, boards, harnesses, impact vests and helmets. No need to travel with heavy gear.

If you’re an independent rider looking to rent, we have a full range of Ozone kites available by the hour, day or week.

Clothing for off the water

Jambiani is a conservative Muslim village, cover up when walking through the village. Light linen trousers or a sarong over your swimwear is respectful and practical. Evenings can be warm but a light layer is useful if you’re sitting outside.

Tech & extras

GoPro or action camera — highly recommended. Your sessions in the crystal clear lagoon will look incredible on camera. Bring a waterproof mount for your helmet or kite bar.

Power bank — electricity can be unreliable in Jambiani. Keep your phone charged for WhatsApp bookings and navigation.

Cash — many places in Jambiani don’t accept cards. Bring USD or Tanzanian Shillings. There are ATMs in Paje and Stone Town.

Mosquito repellent — evenings can bring mosquitoes, especially near the beach. DEET-based repellent works best.

What to leave at home

Your own kite gear — too heavy and not needed. Your wetsuit — water temperature in Zanzibar is around 27-28°C year-round, you won’t need it. Anything valuable — keep jewellery and expensive items at home or in your hotel safe.

One last tip

Book your kite lessons before you arrive — especially in peak season (June-September). At Zanzikite, you can book via WhatsApp and we’ll confirm your spot straight away. Message us at +255 779 376 354 and we’ll help you plan the perfect kite holiday in Jambiani. 🪁☀️
