Kitesurfing girl on Zanzibar island

Why Jambiani is one of the best kite spots in Zanzibar

When people think of kitesurfing in Zanzibar, Paje often comes to mind first. But ask any experienced kiter who’s spent time on the island, and many will tell you the same thing: Jambiani is special.

Here’s why we chose Jambiani as the home of Zanzikite, and why so many of our students say it’s the highlight of their trip.

A lagoon made for kitesurfing

Jambiani’s Mwendawima beach sits on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, facing the Indian Ocean. The lagoon here is wide, flat, and shallow ; perfect for learning to kitesurf. At low tide, you can stand almost anywhere in the water, which means complete beginners can learn in total safety without the stress of deep water or strong currents.

The wind blows consistently from the southeast (May to October) and northeast (December to February), giving Jambiani two reliable kite seasons per year. During peak season, the wind is steady, side-shore, and just the right strength for beginners and intermediates alike.

Away from the crowds

One of the things our students love most about Jambiani is the space. The beach is long, wide, and uncrowded, you can actually enjoy your session without dodging other kiters. There’s a real sense of freedom here that’s hard to find at more popular spots.

The village itself is authentically Zanzibari. Local fishermen bring in their catch every morning, children play on the beach in the evenings, and the pace of life is slow and relaxed. It’s the kind of place that gets under your skin.

Perfect conditions for learning

At Zanzikite, we chose Mwendawima specifically because it offers ideal learning conditions. The flat water means students can focus on kite control and board skills without fighting waves. The consistent wind makes every session productive. And the beautiful scenery makes it impossible not to smile, even when you fall.

Our students regularly tell us they made faster progress here than they expected and we believe the conditions play a big part in that.

More than just kitesurfing

Jambiani has everything you need for a great kite holiday. There are excellent hotels and guesthouses right on the beach, from budget options to boutique properties. Local restaurants serve fresh seafood and Swahili dishes. And when the wind drops, there’s snorkeling, sunset dhow trips, and the warmth of a genuine coastal community to enjoy.

Come and see for yourself

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced rider looking for a new spot, Jambiani delivers. And at Zanzikite, we’ll make sure your time on the water is safe, fun, and unforgettable.
